The Museum of Flight hosts multiple events each year focused on veterans. These events range in attendance from 100-300 individuals. The list includes Vietnam War Veterans Day in March, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day in May, an annual Tribute Plaque Ceremony for our own Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in May, and Veterans Day in November. In addition, the Museum's Public Program team facilitate several military-themed programs throughout the year. At each of these programs, Vietnam veterans are invited to stand and be recognized and presented with lapel pins if they have not already received them. In addition, our Docent Corps made up of more than 250 volunteers, more than a dozen of which are Vietnam Veterans, presents lapel pins to veterans on a daily basis as part of their regular duties. One of these Docents also represents the Museum of Flight's Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park, Project Recover, and Puget Sound Honor Flight at annual state conventions. Several of these Docents, and members of our regular staff also keep a supply of pins and materials with them for presenting to veterans we encounter in public settings such as grocery and hardware stores.

While attending the Jackson County Fair on Veterans get in free day, I met a couple of Navy veterans. In talking, one of them said he had never received his 50 Year Anniversary Pin. We were close to my car where I keep extra materials in my trunk. I presented him his pin in the fair parking lot.

It is my hope to visit all nursing homes in the Fort Collins, CO area over the next couple of years and have a ceremony at each one honoring Vietnam Veterans who may not be able to get out to other ceremonies. These hero's deserve to be thanked before its too late. We have a dedicated group of volunteers at the Elks who would make sure each ceremony would be special. I don't know how many there are out there.With over 30 assisted living facilities in the area, I would like to order 200 pins if available. This would be an ongoing project. It would be an honor to do this. I am filling in blanks with approximate numbers. I honestly don't know how many Vietnam/Vietnam era Veterans are living in assisted living. I need to make sure I can get the items first then dive in. Thank you.

In 2025, the ASOM will be hosting a temporary Vietnam exhibit to commemorate the 60th anniversary of when the first American combat troops were deployed in Vietnam. Our community has over 750 veterans who we are trying to award with a Quilt of Valor. We try to do a minimum of 60 per year. To date we have awarded 349 quilts. We started with WWII vets, and have progressed to awarding to the Vietnam War Veterans now. A luncheon will be held for all Vietnam Veterans, Vietnam Veteran Spouses, and their family. We will be presenting the We Honor Veterans Welcome Home Celebration. The celebration consists of reading a poem that is specific for the veteran and/or a spouse. We present several lapel pins, a custom designed challenge coin and a braided and beaded keychain with the Vietnam Service Ribbon colors for each veteran. Each veteran and spouse receive a personalized certificate.

SIR! is a non-profit (known as Sons in Retirement at the state level that has 100+ branches). They provide for the welfare of retired men, who are pursuing a common goal, the enjoyment of their later years with dignity and pride. SIR! members meet at the Elks Lodge in Rancho Cordova and will be hosting a Vietnam Veterans Day luncheon in March to honor Vietnam Veterans and their families. The date is still being finalized, but is anticipated to take place between March 24, 2025, and no later than March 31, 2025. Many of the SIR! members locally are veterans and many of them served during the Vietnam War.

The Goodfellow Air Force Base EC-47 Weyandt-Eddy Memorial Plaza was dedicated on Vietnam Veterans Day in 2022. As last year (2024) we are planning a special ceremony to honor and welcome home all Vietnam veterans with special attention given to deceased Vietnam veterans surviving spouses. Another 300 newly engraved pavers will be dedicated to veterans from all services and all wars. Plans are made for additional activities following the dedication/memorialization ceremony, including an on-site reception to include a "Gathering at the Goon" photo opportunity, and possible windshield tours of the base. Hospice of Redmond is planning the program, entertainment, light snacks, and they have a Wall of Heroes there. One of our post members who lives in the general area is a volunteer there and wants to present a Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pins to any Vietnam veteran or surviving spouse who has not yet received one. He has contacted the two Band of Brothers groups in that area, but only one has any pins (only 9) left. We have 94 pins on hand, along with other commemorative materials, but yesterday received a request from another post member to participate in a different event to honor Vietnam era veterans hosted by the VFW Auxiliary of Clatsop County, Oregon, on March 29. That event is expected to have 75 to 100 Vietnam era vets and likely twice that in attendees.

Veterans and their families are invited to a breakfast and a symposium with the junior class of Blooming Grove High School. We will also invite them to a pinning ceremony for those who have not yet received their pin to be held on May 17th, Armed Forces Day in collaboration with our Senior Parade.

This may not really qualify as an event per se, but we spent the past few weeks hand writing thank you cards to all the Vietnam veterans in our database we had or could find addresses for. Each card contained a personal message of thanks. Our database reflects approximately 140 men and women we have given lapel pins and DAR certificates to. However, some didn't have current addresses and sadly, several had passed away.
