Event was held at 9:00 a.m. on Memorial Day May 27th 2024. The Commander, VFW Post 609 Gerald Krueger, and his wife Jessica, an auxiliary member, spearheaded a local Veteran Service Organization (VSO) campaign to raise awareness, enthusiasm, and ultimately fund-raising to place additional Veterans' name plaques honoring Alexandria citizens who served and died fighting World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, at Alexandria's "1940 monument to the City's War Dead from all wars." Our first of three planned veterans' name plaques, honors 68 Alexandrians who died or were missing in action during the Vietnam War. With collaboration of the Alexandria Office of the Historian (Gretchen Bulova) we worked feverishly from November 2023 to Memorial Day May 27th to elicit funding from 16 different VSOs and a number of individual to raise
$15,000. to purchase two Vietnam Veterans' name plaques.
A duplicate copy of the plaque, was later hung on the City's historic Gadsby Tavern where George Washington resigned his commission after the Revolutionary War. The duplicate plaque was unveiled on June 14th at 400 Cameron Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
A Johns Hopkins school of music student, Zoey Carlos, also a CAP Cadet, sang the National Anthem on Memorial Day May 27th 2024. American Legion Post 24's chaplain Richard Evans gave the invocation. Alexandria's City historian, Gretchen Bulova served as MC. Historical remarks were offered by the City Mayor Justin Wilson, and VFW Post 609 Commander: Gerald P. Krueger. Two gold star families attended. One a gold star sister: Sue Rampey, a Post 609 AUX member, participated in the unveiling of the newly installed 68-person veterans' name plaque. Bugler Cecil Gregg, a Boy Scout of Troop 1515 blew taps. It was a beautiful weather day, and countless photos, poses with the new plaque, were taken of Gold Star family members, the Kruegers, and groups of VFW, American Legion & Vietnam Veterans. A HUGE success story.
