This was an annual dinner for all veterans provided by the Elks, who graciously allowed us to stand by the doors to pin any Vietnam Era Veterans that were in attendance. We will probably not do this again, as it was difficult to properly acknowledge these special veterans in a way that we were used to- with certificates, and individual acknowledgment. We will have to have our own pinnings in the future, and not just try to catch veterans on- the- fly. We were about to pin 51 veterans, and 4 Surviving Spouses.

All the events were total successes. Our objectives of honoring the veterans and recognizing the support of family was met. There were many thanks from the veterans, family, and staff. We were able to quickly adapt to add any veterans that were previously not prepared for (asked facilities for lists in advance) - patients and staff. Many told stories and were moved by the recognition. We also partnered with local American Legion posts to have them come volunteer to do the actual pinnings. The only issue that came up was making sure that there was enough space for attendees and for the veterans to maneuver around in order to make it to the red carpet. We did also have some issues with music connecting to the bluetooth device. Having the lyrics to the songs was good, even though the songs were very familiar. Advice is to make sure that ceremonies are far apart timewise within a given day for set up, clean up, and time to interact with the attendees. Used lapel pins and certificates still in stock.

This was a huge success! I want to do one every day. We advertised on the museum's website and passed out fliers at the local veteran organizations. The main obstacle was competing with other Veteran Day activities in town. The greatest thing was we had a Vietnam War veteran as the guest speaker. He is from the area and spoke to his peers and they loved it. We had an OEF retired officer pin the pins on the honorees. It was so moving seeing these veterans report in, bring their own flag, salute with honor and willingly share with him. The fire department posted the colors. We used the 2 1/2 minute Moment of Truth video as the opening and closed with 18 quilts given away by a local quilt guild. My favorite part was when 3 men had told me they were there but did not want to go on stage. At the end when we asked if anybody had been missed--they came up! My advice is keep it simple and make a connection with them. Most of them are not use to fussy. I didn't realize the ADA ramp to the stage was on the back side of the theater until everyone was being seated. So make sure you look for those obstacles. I was supposed to be directing the seating, but got caught up in problem solving various questions from random people and welcoming veterans. Luckily some of my peers stepped in and directed the seating, so I will schedule two additional volunteers next time in addition to the two working the front door. This was a big help, because we wanted to call each veteran up by name, we asked them to preregister for this free event. We turned the registration information into a business card size slip of paper and laid them out on the table. As the honoree came, they collected their name slip and kept it. In the ceremony when it was time to pin them, each row of vets came forward and gave their paper to the speaker at the podium. This allowed us to 1) get an attendance count and 2) made sure we called the right person by the right name--it was genius.

Veteran to Veteran Cafes were held on several dates at different senior living facilities in the Southeastern PA region. These events provide an opportunity for Veterans to gather and share stories while also being recognized and honored for their service. Each event includes food and beverage, playing of taps and the National Anthem, a recognition speech, and a pinning ceremony. Vietnam Veterans are provided with the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Pin and Presidential Proclamations. Additional materials are not needed as we have unused materials from other events.
